5 First Steps After Water Damage

5 First Steps After Water Damage
Water Damage

Stop the source and stay safe

If it is safe to do so, shut off the water source and avoid rooms with standing water near outlets, panels, or appliances. Electrical hazards and contaminated water can turn a cleanup into a serious safety risk.

Document the damage before cleanup

Take photos and short videos of affected floors, walls, ceilings, furniture, and visible water lines. This gives your insurance adjuster a clearer record of what happened before materials are moved or removed.

Start drying and moisture checks promptly

Water can move behind baseboards, under flooring, and into wall cavities. A restoration team can use moisture readings, thermal imaging when useful, air movers, and dehumidifiers to review hidden areas and guide drying decisions.

Repair and rebuild path

After the first response, know what has to be repaired.

Water damage content should connect the first-hour response to the repair scope that follows: drywall, flooring, cabinets, trim, paint, documentation, and reconstruction decisions.
