Shut the water off before you start cleaning
A winter pipe break keeps feeding water into the house until the supply is closed. If you can reach the main valve or the fixture shutoff without stepping through standing water near outlets, the panel, or a ceiling light, turn it off. If the ceiling is sagging or a fixture is holding water, stay out from under it. Electricity and a wet floor are the hazard to solve before towels, buckets, or a shop vacuum.
A frozen line that has not split yet
The frozen-pipe checklist on this site says a trickle at the faucet on a cold morning can mean ice still in the line. Open that faucet so thawing water has somewhere to go. If you can see the frozen section, warm it with a hair dryer or a heating pad. Do not use an open flame, a blowtorch, or a kerosene heater on the pipe. If you cannot find the frozen section, or if a wet spot shows on drywall, a ceiling, or a floor, shut the main off and call a plumber.
Where Northern Virginia houses hide the pipe
Loudoun County notes on this site call out winter supply-line breaks, including two-story plans with a bathroom over a garage. That pipe sits on an outside wall and can freeze while the rest of the house feels fine. Ashburn pages describe finished basements, townhome party walls in Ashburn Village and Broadlands, and supply lines that dump water into a lower level. Leesburg pages separate older downtown plumbing and plaster from newer basements in Lansdowne, River Creek, and Potomac Station. Sterling pages list burst supply lines next to sump and storm-basement water in Sugarland Run, Cascades, Countryside, and Potomac Falls. The first photos should show which of those it is.
If the house will be empty
The same checklist says not to turn the heat off when you leave. Set the thermostat to at least 55°F and ask someone to look in on the house. That is prevention, not a repair. It does not replace a shutoff if a pipe has already burst while you are away. When you walk back into standing water, do not wade through it to reach the thermostat or the panel.
What to photograph before anything is moved
Photograph the pipe or fitting, the wet rooms, ceiling stains, flooring, baseboards, cabinets, and any visible water line. Note when you found the leak and when the water was shut off. Water from a supply line can travel through wall cavities, between floors, and under finished flooring, so a dry-looking hallway is not proof the loss stopped at the bathroom. Those photos are the record the burst-pipe cleanup guide on this site asks for before extraction starts.
Drying is separate from fixing the pipe
A plumber repairs or replaces the failed pipe. Prime Solutions LLC’s water-damage scope is the water that already left the pipe: extraction, drying, moisture checks, and notes for the rooms and materials that got wet, then interior repair planning after the structure is stable. The office is 42785 Generation Dr, Ste 516, Ashburn, VA 20147. Call (703) 832-2773. Response timing depends on crew availability, traffic, and current project load. Coverage of a sudden pipe break versus an outside flood is a carrier decision. This page does not state a price or an arrival window.
Questions about a winter pipe break
What should I do first if a pipe bursts in a Northern Virginia winter?
Shut off the water if you can do it safely, stay out of wet rooms near electricity, and photograph the source and the wet rooms before cleanup. Do not use an open flame on the pipe.
How should I thaw a pipe that is frozen but not leaking?
Open the faucet, warm the frozen section with a hair dryer or heating pad if you can reach it, and never use an open flame. If you see a wet spot or cannot find the ice, shut the main off and call a plumber.
What thermostat setting does the site recommend when a Northern Virginia house is empty?
The frozen-pipe checklist says to leave the heat on and set it to at least 55°F, and to have someone check the house. That does not stop a pipe that has already burst.
Is a burst supply line the same thing as a flood?
No. A supply-line break is water from the plumbing system. Storm or surface water that enters from outside is a different event. The carrier decides what the policy covers. Photograph the source so the file shows which one happened.
Does Prime Solutions LLC repair the broken pipe?
No. A plumber should repair the pipe. Prime Solutions LLC can help with the water in the building: extraction, drying, moisture checks, documentation, and interior repair planning. Call (703) 832-2773.
Which local pages describe winter pipe and basement water?
Ashburn, Leesburg, and Sterling each have a service-area page and a water-damage page. The burst-pipe service page is the general cleanup scope. The frozen-pipe education checklist is the prevention list.
